Cabo San Lucas is internationally known for its incredible fishing. Sport fishing is huge in Cabo San Lucas for all the reasons you might expect. The late French explore Jacques Cousteau once called the Sea of Cortez, the world aquarium.”
Its beautiful waters drew Ernest Hemingway to sample its abundance of marina life. Cabo use to be a remote coastal village, but now an easily accessible fishing destination reachable for anyone wishing to get a taste of first class angling. In many areas, fishing blue water means to go out to sea 10 to even 50 miles before lines are tossed into the water. A ride out for just a few miles is always an option! That’s about all you need to get started fishing in the Cabo San Lucas area, many nice size marlin, dorado, sails and wahoo have been caught in just a short distance from shore.
Billfish are very poplar in Los Cabos waters, topped by three species of marlin (blue marlin, black marlin and the showpiece of Los Cabos fishing, the striped marlin). Basically, the billfish can weight from 220 to 550 pounds. And there is always the possibility to reel in a grander marlin. Two other billfish species are also caught here, the sailfish, pursued by fly fishing anglers looking for a kick, and broadbill swordfish, caught with deep dropped dead baits. Marlin season runs from September through March, with regular daily catches of six to twelve marlin during high season. February through April is ultimately the best time for dorado, where catches were weighing up to 75 pounds.
As you plan your trip, keep in mind the best time for the fishing seasons. Fall and winter are outstanding for exceptional fishing! Yellowfin tuna strike hard September though February, and wahoo and sailfish round out the mix with the warm water of summer. Bottom fishing for jacks, grouper, roosterfish and snapper can take place at all times of the year; and hammerheads, threshers and makos can be found in the winter and spring. If you are a true sports fisherman, there are many fishing tournaments throughout the year. Here is a list of some of the bigger ones…
Cabo Summer Slam, also known as Pelagic Triple Crown. While much of the summer tournaments are around the East Cape, Cabo San Lucas is always a focal point for larger sponsors and the more lucrative payouts (over $200,000 in payouts). The tournament is normally held in June each year.
The Bisbee’s East Cape Offshore is late July and early August. Water temperatures play a significant role in where to fish. As the temperatures increase fishing migrates to the East Cape area of the Sea of Cortez. Again large money payouts are made (based on entry fees) to the billfish, tuna and dorado anglers.
Los Cabos Billfish Tournament takes place in October and offers large cash payouts for each team, largest tuna, wahoo, dorado and billfish. Usually is slatted for late October.
Bisbee’s Black and Blue is often called the super bowl of sport fishing due to the millions of dollars in cash payouts. This tournament is usually around the end of October.
Won Los Cabos Tuna Jackpot has ties back as early as the 1950’s and is very popular with over 100 teams competing. Prize money is normally over $650,000!

Our fishing day trip with Captain Julio and Mate Mario was a success and exceed our expectations. We have been on several fishing day trips but this was by far the best overall experience. Much of it was of course that we got our first Marlin but that was not all. Whole family was enjoying about the trip – we saw several whales, dolphins, big turtle and many beautiful sea lions came to our boat after our trip to eat rest of the fish – kids just loved it. If you are planning to go fishing in Cabo San Lucas, you are fool if you don´t choose Captain Julio. There were tens of boats fishing Marlin when we were out and we were the only boat which caught it. We here treated as heroes when we came back to harbor. That made as feel special. Also served lunch was great. We were doing snorkeling the next day and heard that on that day two boats got Marlin, and one of those of Captain Julio´s Blue Star. Make your reservations early so you don’t miss the fishing trip of your life.”
